Agase is fast growing and soft wooded tree grows up to 3-8mt in height. Leaves are regular, deciduous, and abruptly pinnate and rounded about 15-30cm long and has 10-20 leaflets. Esbania grandiflora is a fast-growing perennial, deciduous or evergreen legume tree, up to 10-15 m high (Ecocrop, 2010). Its lifespan is about 20 years (Heering et al., 1992). Its roots are heavily nodulated and some floating roots may develop in waterlogged conditions. The trunk is straight with few branches. The leaves, up to 30 cm long, are pinnately compound with 20-50 oblong leaflets, 1-4 cm long and 0.5-1.5 cm broad. The flowers are white, yellowish, pink or red and borne in axillary racemes. The pods are 50-60 cm long, glabrous and indehiscent, and hang vertically. They contain 15 to 50 dark brown seeds, 5 mm long and 2.5-3 mm broad (Ecocrop, 2010; Cook et al., 2005).
Utilisation
Sesbania grandiflora is a valued fodder for ruminants. It is used in grazed paddocks as mature trees are out of browse height, or as cut-and-carry forage integrated into cropping systems. Its low tolerance to defoliation makes it badly suited to direct grazing (Cook et al., 2005). Little or no breeding work has been undertaken. In Indonesia, early flowering varieties are preferred and selected for by local farmers in Lombok, where flowers are an important food crop, while later flowering varieties predominate in West Timor, where the species is primarily used as a cut and carry cattle feed (Cook et al., 2005). The leaves, flowers and pods of Sesbania grandiflora are eaten as a vegetable in Southeast Asia. The dried leaves are used for their ethno-medicinal properties (FAO, 2010; Duke, 1983; Gutteridge et al., 1994). Other uses include firewood and green manure.
Distribution 
Sesbania grandiflora is native to Asia and is now widespread in most humid tropical regions of the world. It is often cultivated on the low dikes between rice fields (Göhl, 1982) or in association with Guinea grass (Cook et al., 2005).
Optimal growth conditions are 22-30°C mean annual temperatures, 2000-4000 mm annual rainfall, at an altitude from sea level up to 800-1000 m (Cook et al., 2005). Agati is adapted to a wide range of rainfall zones and soil types. It can be grown on heavy clay, alkaline and saline soils, as well as poorly drained soils and poorly fertilized soils (FAO, 2010). During waterlogging and floods, it develops floating adventitious roots and protective spongy tissue. Agati withstands acidic soils (Heering et al., 1992), 6- to 7-month drought periods (Ecocrop, 2010) and can survive with 800 mm annual rainfall. It is intolerant of high winds that can break stems and branches (Cook et al., 2005). It does not thrive in temperatures below 10°C (FAO, 2010). 
Forage management 
Sesbania grandiflora is notable for its rapid early growth (up to 2 m high within 100 days after seedling). In Java an annual yield of 27 kg of green leaf/tree was achieved by harvesting side branches every 3-4 months, and a green manure yield of 55 t/ha green material in 6.5 months was achieved (Cook et al., 2005). If the trees are cut back to a suitable height, a large supply of fresh fodder can be obtained for most of the dry season, when only rice straw and dry grass are otherwise available (Göhl, 1982).

ABOUT PKM1

Moringa Seeds (Early Variety) PKM-1. A hybrid variety, PKM1 was derived from Moringa oleifera and it is grown for its heavy biomass and tender leaves. Characteristic features of these hybrid varieties include wide and dark green leaves, long and tender pods, bushy habit and rapid growth after cropping. Moringa PKM1 seeds were developed at Periya Kulam Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu. This gives largest yields at the shortest period. PKM1 had a better taste than other hybrid varieties. It is one of the hybrid moringa varieties to give a higher yield when compared to others. Length of each pod is 45-75 cms. Each plant yields 300-400 sticks.

SIZE OF THE PKM1

PKM – 1 – Plants grow to a height of 4-6 m and come to flower in 90-100 days after planting. The first harvest starts 160-170 days after planting and on an average each tree bears 200-225 fruits / year. Pods are 65-70 cm long with 6.3 cm girth and 150 g weight. Fruits are green coloured and highly pulpy.

SPACING

Moringa pkm1 needs dig pits of size 45 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm with a spacing of 2.0 – 2.5 m either way.

Moringa provides a rich and rare combination of nutrients, amino acids, antioxidants, anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties used for nutrition and healing. Moringa leaves have seven times the Vitamin C of oranges, four times the calcium of milk, four times the vitamin A of carrots, three times the potassium of bananas, and double the protein of yoghurt. With over 92 nutrients and 46 natural antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory compounds it has been dubbed the ‘miracle tree’. Additionally, the moringa oil, harvested from the seeds are much sought after in the formulation of skin care products. 

A study titled “Bioactive Components in Moringa Oleifera Leaves Protect against Chronic Disease” published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes concludes thus:  Protective effects of MO leaves against chronic diseases: cardiovascular disease, by lowering plasma lipids including triglycerides (TG) decreasing blood pressure and reducing oxidative stress; diabetes, by lowering plasma glucose], reducing insulin resistance and increasing? cell function; NAFLD, by reducing hepatic lipids, reducing liver enzymes and decreasing hepatic inflammation and cancer, by reducing DNA damage, viability of cancer cells and increasing apoptosis.
 
It flowers after 100 to 110 days, following planting. The fruit length is advantageous as its  60 cm medium length plus or minus 15 cm. One can start harvesting the fruits after 160 to 180 days post-planting. It gives 350 to 400 fruits per plant in the first year and 800 to 1000 fruits in the second year. Informs Dr Mulge: “It can be maintained for 15 years. Its yield reduces due to infection of borer or poor management necessitating replanting after 8 to 10 years.
 
Bhagya KDM, developed by Dr B M Madalgeri and Dr Ravindra Mulge while at KRC College of Horticulture, Arabhavi in Belagavi Distt.  “When it was released its demand for cultivation was high as is evident from the number of seeds sold in the State from the university-held shows. Probably, the lack of extension activities in showcasing the variety outside the State and insufficient seed production and supply chain may be the cause for not being known beyond Karnataka.”

Suited for high-density planting which can be maintained at a height of 2 to 4 meters by pruning and training, Bhagya KDM is an institute-developed variety released at the State level and not a farmers variety. Its parental material was PKM 3 selection carried out since from 1998 and released during 2011.
